DDE's dont trigger after setting a value list through custom object

Hello,

We have a requirement to set a values list field based on user groups and trigger DDE's based on set values.

We were able to set the values list with help of custom object, but DDE's associated to this field don't trigger until there is a manual change (de select or select a value) in the field.

Could someone please help me on how to trigger events post setting the values list field ?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I believe DDEs can only be triggered by fields and not custom objects, but I may have it wrong. I know that you cannot trigger DDEs in Advanced Workflow changes.
