Is Silverlight still in Archer 6.1? Yes, it is.

Is RSA working to remove Silverlight anytime soon? Yes, we are. Diligently!

In keeping with the same themes described in Brian Rohlena’s Black Hole blog, Archer Product Management is working to provide greater transparency, ongoing dialogue, simplicity and visibility.

As such, we want to make sure that you know we are committed to removing Silverlight from Archer and accomplishing this as quickly as possible.

Why does Silverlight need to go?

Microsoft Silverlight is a plug-in that was originally built into the Archer Platform to efficiently accomplish a number of tasks. Since then, Silverlight has fallen out of favor and is on its way to becoming a non-supported tool in modern browsers.

What’s the impact?

Only a handful of Archer’s front-office pages utilize Silverlight, the most commonly used being Advanced Search and User Preferences. For the Administrator pages (Application Builder, Access Controls, etc.), nearly every feature employs Silverlight.

As we remove Silverlight from each page, we’re also taking this opportunity to advance some of our other strategic initiatives. Silverlight removal will enable:

  • Features to be accessed through native browsers on mobile devices
  • Incorporation of “responsive design,” to create pages that dynamically detect and orient screen layouts for a better mobile experience
  • Improvements in accessibility that is consistent with the international standards of WCAG AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)

What’s the plan?

As we continue to develop Silverlight-free pages in Archer, we’ve developed a library of standardized components and style sheets that can be used repeatedly to maintain consistency in presentation and increase velocity in replacing Silverlight pages.

In an effort to make the biggest impact on the largest user base possible, we are replacing Silverlight in the front office first, immediately followed by work on the Administrator components. Our goal is to be Silverlight-free for the front office by the end of this year.

At RSA Charge you can spend an hour with Archer product specialists to learn about the upcoming release highlighting a Silverlight-free front-end user interface. The lab will walk you through a comparison of the individual user experience today and how it will change with this upcoming release. There are four sessions available. Register today!
